Formulation Innovation
for better dosing, reduced wastage and better patient care
The workshop is intended to be an interactive learning session. There will be discussion and debate on the topics raised.
The talks will aim to cover the following topics:
- An assessment of the NHS Drug Wastage problem – the size of the problem, and what initiatives have been tried to reduce the wasted spend.
- A thorough assessment of swallowing difficulties and dysphagia – the epidemiology, aetiology, comorbidities and sequelae – including a consideration of the impact that alternative formulations can have on patient adherence.
- An overview of the current understanding of apathy, particularly in the elderly. This will include an assessment of its impact on adherence to medication.
- The relevance of tablet shapes and sizes to ease of swallowing including an assessment of alternative formulations and how these can improve the situation.
- The development of a new questionnaire – the Medicines Acceptability Questionnaire – and the validity testing done to date.
Can Formulation Innovation further help reduce NHS Drug Wastage through improvement of patient adherence?
Diversification of formulations to target patients who struggle with a variety of issues associated with taking solid dosage forms may potentially help improve patient adherence and subsequently reduce wastage.
The Guidelines for the Managment of Patients with Swallowing Difficulties (ref. 1) states that:

- Right TIME, using the
- Right DOSE, in the
- Right FORM
Prescribing decisions that fall below the accepted standard can lead to:
- Civil liability
- Criminal liability
- Professional liability
- Breach of employment contract
